A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers, including House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers and China select committee Chair Mike Gallagher, expressed concerns about Chinese companies collecting and handling sensitive data during autonomous vehicle testing in the United States. Letters were sent to 10 Chinese-related companies, including Baidu, Nio, WeRide, Didi Chuxing, and Xpeng, asking them to answer questions about their data collection practices during autonomous vehicle testing in California and elsewhere. The lawmakers called for greater transparency and asked about the types of data collected, where it is stored, and whether it is shared with the Chinese government or others. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg previously expressed national security concerns about Chinese autonomous vehicle companies operating in the United States.
