California Privacy Law - Primer

In 2018, California put into law the California Consumer Privacy Act - CCPA.

In 2020, the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) became law, some provisions entering into force January 1, 2023. It amends the CCPA and includes additional privacy protections for consumers.

The CPRA established the The California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) assumed rulemaking authority in April 2022 - to implement and enforce the law. It took over this role from the attorney general effective April 21, 2022.
