Beware of providing email addresses to retailers – in this case the retailer, working with Facebook, were tracking purchases and creating profiles on customers for use in advertising.
Home Depot retained a history of the purchases made using a particular email address and information about those purchases. Meta provides an offline conversions tool which compares advertisements on Facebook with real-world outcomes such as in-store purchases.
